Why do we wear makeup?

I’ve always been interested in the reasons behind why we wear make up and the impact it can have on our mental state has always fascinated me.

Growing up as a seasoned stage school attendee I’ve always felt a huge passion for theatrics. There is something about the transformative power of becoming someone else through costume and cosmetics that has always interested me. Back then it was red lipstick, blue eyeshadow and we’d use hairspray to set our foundation! (Safe to say I would not recommend doing that).

Makeup and costume builds on the characterisation of any role.

Coming from the theatre I have played some fabulous characters where I get to wear gowns and I get to be a princess or someone from the 1920s, or I get to wear showgirl costumes. I’m used to wearing a wardrobe that changes how I feel.

I love my job because I see the impact it has on my clients. They stand taller and smile wider when they see the final result. The effects of a makeup appointment last long after the make up application, photographs last forever and you can cherish how amazing you felt on that day.

I created a poll via my Instagram platform to find out their opinion. The answers were from people of different genders, ages and backgrounds. See the results below;

Does makeup help you express yourself?

47% answered YES. 53% answered NO.

OK, so this one massively surprised me! I personally love to use makeup as a medium to express my mood and style.

How do you feel when you wear makeup?

10% answered Self conscious. 88% answered More confident.

I wasn’t surprised at this one. I’ve always felt more confident when I’m wearing makeup.

Do you wear make up daily?

38% answered YES. 58% answered NO.

I know pre- pandemic the answers would be very different to this. I’ve noticed the effect of the pandemic and how it’s changed people’s daily routine. Normal routines have been thrown out the window and we’re seeing a new ‘normal’ working-from-home natural look.

Makeup. Less is more?

81% Less is more. 20% answered Pile it on baby, I’m not shy.

Well I have the right audience because my makeup style is all about ‘less is more’. I believe in looking fabulous while keeping it sophisticated and classy. I find seeing the impact my job can have on peoples confidence so rewarding. Wether It’s helping them feel more relaxed or supporting them through an emotional day, makeup is more than meets the eye.
